Henri Gonzo papírsárkányai (The Kites of Henri Gonzo) – a musical discussion

The focus of this musical literary discussion is on the frontman of Caribbean lineage Henri Gonzo, leader of Henri Gonzo és a Papírsárkányok (Henri Gonzo and the Kites) and of Fonogram and Petőfi Award-winner Fran Palermo.

Papírsárkányok (The Kites) were born out of necessity, so to speak. During the quarantine, Henri began writing lyrics in Hungarian – he read widely and immersed himself in the work of Hungarian artists from Márta Mészáros to Béla Bartók and János Vaszary. He drew inspiration from many places. At first, he translated lyrics into Hungarian and set to music poems by poets from Dezső Kosztolányi to Sándor Csoóri, as a result of which his own voice gradually began to emerge. The debut album titled Cementkert (The Cement Garden) is 14-piece, one hour long record that brings a new soundscape to Hungarian pop music, while at the same time revealing a wide range of influences (e.g. prominent figures of the Hungarian Beat era, Fonográf or Tolcsvay and psychedelic British folk rock from Donovan to Nick Drake). In the discussion we will talk about the Hungarian lyrics, the Papírsárkányok and Fran Palermo songs, and while listening to the songs we will also talk about the connection between film music and Hungarian songs, or the influence of Gulácsy and Ágnes Nemes Nagy on Henri.
