Petőfi poems turned into folk songs – concert by Sára Tímár and her orchestra

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Sándor Petőfi, Sára Tímár and her orchestra have created a new programme of the poet's poems that have become folk songs. A significant part of one of our greatest poet’s work has been preserved in folklore for over a century. A single line or stanza appears in many folk songs, but entire poems have also lived almost literally on the lips of the people. It is also remarkable that his poems were sung as if the author had come from among them, not only in genres that strive for fidelity to the text, such as the ballad, but also in folk songs, plaintive songs and even dance tunes. Petőfi's popularity is shown by the fact that the texts of his poems were sung all over the Carpathian Basin, so the concert will include folk songs from the Zobor region of the former Upper Hungary, or Gömör, but also from the Mezőség and Küküllő regions of Transylvania.

The musical editors of the Petőfi Poems Turned into Folk Song programme are Sára Tímár and Tamás Nyitrai.
